About
"It's Just My Observation"
Behind the Fence is a collection of photographic works from the 90's forward by photographer Karen Hill. Her interest is in the underlining troubling parts of human interaction and creates images that reflect this. Behind the Fence was Hill's first project in the 90's and focused on the idea of intrusion into one's private space while in public. Working with a small camera equipped with a waist level finder and following in the steps of some of the great street photographers of her time such as Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand and Lisette Model, Hill observes the world just beyond her grasp. From the streets, while at the Yale School of Art, Hill started documenting family life and recalling distant memories of loss and turmoil which, years later, culminated into the project, Looking for Lisa. From there, Hill moved indoors and began a new project on a "smaller" scale, and began setting up imagined and troubling scenarios using dolls in dollhouses. In her current project, i am here, Hill returns to the genre of street photography by focusing on the current obsession with smart phones in our public lives by observing equal parts of humor and horror.
In her words, "I spend a great deal of time photographing. I like to capture what I see and feel, and I like to think I look a little deeper at my subject. Humanity, culture, behavior and light interest me the most. Not simple subjects but I like to think the time spent capturing my subject is time well spent drawing a larger picture. Behind the Fence is work I've been making for the past few decades. When I look back at this work I see a complicated story, one that is still being told. My work is 100% film based, I believe that film better describes what I see, and I believe in film as an art form. When you look at my photos, please also look at yourself, we all have things to learn".
